I know people buy gold in many forms and from many sources.
Even though most gold we buy is probably recycled; I don't like buying the gold labelled ABC, poured by refiners here, etc as I believe that this gold comes predominantly from unethical buys and in my opinion dubious sources. All the gold buyer groups that "rob" the public contribute to the manufacture of these kind of bars.
I avoid them because I don't like the public being robbed.
They are often only minimally cheaper than a branded bar from Perth Mint, or PAMP etc.
Does anyone else have views on this choice we as buyers have?

Personally gold is gold, as long as the purity is what it is i couldnt care less where it came from because in reality if ABC dont refine it, someone else will so it makes no difference.
Perth mint has a good name in quality hence the premium, but again it makes no difference to me personally.

I don't know about some of the statements that you have made. ABC also refine gold that was mined in NSW as seen here

Mining has all sort of impacts including environmental and social. So how far are you prepared to investigate and classify as 'ethical'?

Perth mint gold is from Kalgoorlie, so I know it is mined ethically, with workers being looked after. South African gold mines use a lot of slave labour basically, and some of the mines have taken land with no compensation to the previous owner.
As for the gold clubs, I say if someone has no idea what their gold is worth, how are they ever going to get a good deal. They should be glad they even get 60%. With the Internet today, there is no excuse for ignorance, especially considering gold has been one of the most important commodities for millennia.
As the old saying goes, "A fool and their money are soon parted".

One might consider "recycled" gold more ethical than freshly mined gold, so it depends on your point of view.
Just don't buy any gold dust from the Ghana spammers that occasionally post here.

JP Morgan holds a massive short position in silver, some of which it is said to have inherited as a concentrated speculative position from Bear Stearns. Retreats from such overextended positions are never easy, and therefore never straightforward. Having such a position can be very profitable in the short term since it gives one remarkable control over the paper price of a commodity, paricularly if the regulators are willing to turn a blind eye to certain trading practices.

Playing devil's advocate here, but is it ethical to take advantage of JP Morgan's supposed manipulation (unethical most would argue) when we stack silver ? :p

Absolutely not.
Why would I take ethical responsibility for a decision and/or process beyond my means to control?
I pay what the asking price of the market demands for metal. Value after the fact is in the eye of the beholder. The market decides that Silver is simply not worth higher than what I am paying and in as such, I am not underpaying anyone anything - I'm paying exactly what the market demands as a fair trade.

I feel we all need to take responsibility for our purchases, if you knew that six children died getting you your 10oz silver stacker would you still buy it just because its so shinny? and looks so awesomely awesomely good? If I was a dealer and told you I was going to kill a dolphin for every 100oz I sold would you buy from me? at the end of the day, i want my money going to support good companies, that act responsibly, do right by their employees and where possible keep the money in Australia.
Yes you can't know everything, but its about making responsible choices with the information you have.. I could also state that turning a blind eye and not accepting responsibility has caused many of the problems we face today.

I think we are a very long way from not just endorsing, but actively encouraging such an ideal in humanity mate.
Whilst there's a buck to be made, people WILL suffer for it.
Look at the wars we have all over the place right now... and who profits from them.

Unfortunately you are right, but the only way it changes is for people to change their actions.

I buy Perth Mint because it's the most trusted source for those of us living in Australia. If I were in the UK it'd be Sovereigns to the moon. The US it'd be Gold and Silver Eagles baby and if I were lucky enough to live in Canada I'd be stacking Maples. If I were unfortunate enough to be in RSA I'd stack Krugers.
But at the end of the day I stack Gold. Would I buy gold teeth from an old German ex-pat? Hell NO. In fact I wouldn't buy Gold teeth full stop. But you know what I'm getting at.

We all have to live with our own actions and decisions, be it right or wrong. I am happy to be ethical and responsible where I can, not always that easy though.
