Michael Chamberlain dies after battle with leukaemia, aged 72

MICHAEL Chamberlain, the man who fought one of Australia's longest battles for justice — the fight to clear his family's name after their baby daughter Azaria was snatched by a dingo in 1980 — has died aged 72, according to reports.

One cannot imagine being found guilty of such a terrible crime when you are actually innocent. The injustice, the prejudice, the abuse, the scrutiny, the lies.....the poor man.

What possessed the nation to pursue that family in the manner that it did?

Re: Michael Chamberlain dies after battle with leukaemia, aged 72

Yes, history is full of witch hunts and mob justice. It is no different today. The Herald Sun reprints some poorly researched ( if any at all) and often biased piece and many people automatically take it as gospel. Back then, the media jumped upon anything that presented as evidence as proof well before any such evidence could be dismissed.
The Chamberlain case seemed to be a story that just kept on feeding on itself. It did, however, sell a lot of newspapers and increase t.v. revenue.

I first thought they were guilty but as time went on I wasn't sure. Then I saw a good documentary (forgot what it called) on the case and was convinced they were innocent.

No Body found.

circumstantial evidence.

On Australia Day 2009 Mr Bob Chappell, Royal Hobart Hospital's chief radiation physicist went missing. His body has never been found. His partner of 18 years Susan Neill-Fraser has since been found guilty of his murder in the Tasmanian criminal courts.
Bob had been doing maintenance on their yacht Four Winds, purchased by the couple from its previous owners at Scarborough Marina in Queensland. The yacht was to be the focal point of Bob and Sue's retirement together.

The conviction, which relied entirely upon circumstantial evidence, resulted in a prison term for Susan of 26 years. During the trial, there was no proof presented of a murder weapon and no witnesses to the alleged act. Susan has never waivered in her claim of innocence. The accusation that she is responsible for his death, has shocked and hurt her deeply.

From her arrest on August 20 2009 and the subsequent trial in October 2010, Susan spent the entire time at Risdon Women's Prison.

Yep excellent example... you never really know with circumstantial evidence but I guess a Jury can only make a call on the evidence provided...but some people are
EXTREMELY good liars and could/would make you believe them so however much a nice guy he appeared maybe he did do it?

It seemed that just like the stories today re Russian election involvement, a spin was put on the Chamberland's that tapped into peoples biases, even when original accusations removed many had already characterized there opinions.IMO
Trial by media, not anything new I think.

Re: Michael Chamberlain dies after battle with leukaemia, aged 72

When the babies  clothes were found in a heap some time after the disappearance, my alarm bells were ringing..The clothes had scissor marks on them..How could this be so?

Best explanation I heard was that a ranger had a pet dingo who took the baby and brought it back to his camp. He panicked and cut the clothes from the body and placed them in a heap.

People who have had experience around dingoes will state that they will rip the clothes to pieces to get to the meat.

What do you think?

What i think is that is EXACTLY THIS SORT OF MISGUIDED SPECULATION that saw them convicted in the first place.

A mate of mine is an ex-police forensics scientist. He reckons the black trackers not finding anything was highly suspicious. Suspects one of the boys might've rolled onto the baby in the tent through the night or something and the parents covered it up to spare the  boy.  Or something.
