Read about this a month ago so guess they still haven't been caught hmm

The coins are identifiable unambiguously through their serial number

bet the writer learned a new word that morning lol

Inside job, or at least someone who knows what these coins are and already has buyer?

WTB 4 to 6 grams of pure gold. Don't care if it is coin, bar or granules. Near spot, suits anyone who has been tempted to open a certicard or just have some granules to make a ring

I don't want to state the obvious, but wouldn't the perp take them out of the slabs?

Even unslabbed I presume of these coins are 10 $20K plus but less than $200 gold value per coin.

The fact that it is rare, potentially the dealer might want second opinion if not slabbed.... I realise this is US so these big value coins are "more" common but still not like someone walking in two 1 ounce au Pandas

Re: Nearly 1/2 million USD worth of ancients stolen.....

Even if the ancient is taken out of the slab, NGC takes high quality photos of all their slabbed coins and since no ancient is exactly the same, anyone with integrity and half a brain can check the NGC site to compare the pictured slabbed ancient with the raw one in hand.

So, an honest dealer (who is aware of the theft) would be able to know if s/he is buying one of the stolen ancients I believe.
