Political JOTD

But she swatted away that question and claims her case was comparable to that of Mr Slipper, who faced public wrath over his use of Cabcharge dockets, describing it as "totally a different matter altogether".

And Mrs Bishop also attempted to justify the huge expenditure involved in a recent two-week trip to Europe.

"It wasn't $90,000, it was $88,000," she said of Fairfax's recent coverage of her fortnight-long trip to Europe, including time spent campaigning for an international job.

And she repeated her claim that the money on the helicopter flight was spent within the rules, which requires expenditure to relate to the duties of office, even though she was attending a party political fundraiser.

The event was, in fact, a form of community outreach, she said.

Re: Political JOTD

The Libs apparently deleted Abbott's comments about Slipper from their site. So someone grabbed them again from archive.org (which hopefully wont get put on the list of banned sites).

It was here: http://www.liberal.org.au/latest-news/2 … ipper-mp-0

Recovered from a web archive: https://web.archive.org/web/20120511152 … er-MP.aspx

But I'm sure it's just an honest mistake and bad timing, right? neutral

Re: Political JOTD

LOL.

Hypocrites and thieves all.

As someone said: Nothing in politics is accidental. This little fuss has certainly swept Shorten's recent bad publicity off the front pages.

This is the essence of the issue. Abbott will have to sack her. It's all part of the game, but as the Zen Master said 'All that's left to us is to have a good laugh'.

The Bronwyn-'Choppergate' affair has no precent in our history, and will end, as John Hewson says, 'in tears for a lot of people' if Abbott continues to refuse to 'intervene'.

Bit by bit it will be shown that she spent a luxurious fortune — on limousines in Europe; cocktail parties in her enormous quarters for Liberal donors she was by definition, as Speaker, not to be seen to be favouring with largesse; kickbacks for road transport to Liberal associates — that can be seen as corruption at the highest level.

On top of this is how she will be treated in the House. Will they obey her when she says, 'Order'? Will they leave when she bids them to? How, precisely, will she react, and the Sergeant-at-Arms react, when the song 'Hey, Big Spender' is sung when she comes in? How many dissensions from her rulings will be moved? How long will that take?

It is hard, after that, to see what might happen. Will Abbott sack her? Will he then resign? Will his people support him if he does not? What will his numbers be by mid-August if he retains her? In what words can he justify, till then, keeping her on?

It is certain she will not go of her own accord. I have had some dealings with her, and she is very, very mad. She sought the Prime Ministership and was well on the way to it when I brought her undone. She will not give up this last, grasped prize, not ever.

Re: Political JOTD

Laughing so much I'm almost crying.

The Abbott government is facing more scrutiny over travel entitlements, with fresh documents revealing Education Minister Christopher Pyne and his wife had a taxpayer-funded $30,000 trip to London and Rome in April.

The trip included taxpayers being billed $1352 for Mr Pyne to "day let" a room at a swish London hotel before he and his wife, Carolyn, flew back to Australia later that day, and more than $2000 for VIP services at Heathrow Airport.
http://www.smh.com.au/federal-politics/ … 0k6zr.html

and you don't even have to be on Team Australia to travel the world.

Expenses records released last night reveal swan songs for the former government's most senior members dominated the almost $3 million overseas travel bill for all senators and MPs reported in the six months to June 30.

While now retired former foreign minister Bob Carr led the way with a $368,000 bill visiting 26 countries, the records also reveal some MPs racked up big costs on individual trips.

In one of the most expensive, the 10-day trip by former climate change minister Greg Combet and ABC newsreader girlfriend Juanita Phillips through France, Belgium and Germany in April has come in at $72,027.

The bill included $57,673 on airfares, $8914 on hotels and meals and $4634 on ground transport.

The former NSW MP listed the reason as conducting a "series of high-level meetings" and attending the Towards a Global Carbon Market: Prospects for Emissions Trading Conference.

Re: Political JOTD

Federal police are refusing to investigate this matter despite numerous complaints.

I'm not saying they're now a political arm of the Government.
...that officially happened after the Martin Place Siege investigation findings were released.

Re: Political JOTD

The MSM is really winding up:

"There was a black BMW carting her around like royalty," said a source involved with the trip. "She wasn't about to take her eight-inch heels on the subway."

The Speaker's chief of staff and spokesman Damien Jones, who was on the trip with another staff member, confirmed the spending on Saturday.

"All presiding officers get their own transport," he told Fairfax Media. "In fact I think any head of delegations gets their own transport. So yes, that accounts for the $14,000."

Mrs Bishop and her staff also spent $42,000 on flights and $25,000 on meals and accommodation. The other parliamentarians – the Coalition's Nola Marino and Cory Bernardi, and Labor's Glenn Sterle and Tony Zappia – each spent a fraction of those amounts.

The trip was partly aimed at securing Mrs Bishop a plum new job. She was running for president of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, a democracy group based in Switzerland. She lost the vote to Bangladesh's candidate.

Reminded the Treasurer had said the helicopter charter "failed the sniff test", Mrs Bishop said: "Joe [Hockey] says some funny thing sometimes, doesn't he? I think he said poor people don't drive cars or something."

Prime Minister Tony Abbott was standing by his hand-picked Speaker on Saturday. In his first public comments on the expenses scandal, Mr Abbott said he would not ask her to step down.

"No. She's repaid the money and she does a good job," Mr Abbott told reporters in Queensland.

"Bronwyn admitted it was probably an error of judgement and she's repaid the money. She has my confidence."

http://www.smh.com.au/federal-politics/ … ifasi.html

Funny, if I make an error of judgement and accidentally spend money I'm not entitled to I'd probably end up in court.
It seems if you're in the political 'elite' (ie Egregious Liars Into Thieving Everything) , the worst that happens is you're banished from Court.

Re: Political JOTD

The worrying thing about this, if it goes on too long without disappearing, is that Abbott may go beyond the recent record 10 flag appearance and announce some terrorist incident.

Re: Political JOTD

Someone in the comments points out that you should look at the difference in body language.

In 2012 he's looking confidently straight into the camera. In 2015, he wont look into the camera, he wont look at the person asking the question, he just kind of looks down and then away into the distance into the sun.

Re: Political JOTD

One day a florist went to a barber for a haircut. After the cut, he
asked about his bill, and the barber replied, 'I cannot accept money
from you, I'm doing community service this week.'
The florist was pleased and left the shop.
When the barber went to open his shop the next morning, there was a
'thank you' card and a dozen roses waiting for him at his door.
Later, a cop comes in for a haircut, and when he tries to pay his bill,

the barber again replied, 'I cannot accept money from you, I'm doing
community service this week.' The cop was happy and left the shop.
The next morning when the barber went to open up, there was a 'thank
you' card and a dozen doughnuts waiting for him at his door.
Then a Member of Parliament came in for a haircut, and when he went to
pay his bill, the barber again replied, 'I cannot accept money from
you. I'm doing community service this week.' The Member of Parliament
was very happy and left the shop.
The next morning, when the barber went to open up, there were a dozen
Members of Parliament lined up waiting for a free haircut.

Re: Political JOTD

Bronwyn Bishop and Craig Bennett on the red carpet at La Traviata on Sydney Harbour in 2012.

"It's quite proper," a spokesman said. "Members of both sides use entitlements for [such] events.

"They get invited because of the position that they hold. She would not have been invited otherwise. It's not like she bought a ticket herself."

The $1000 in charges by Mrs Bishop that Saturday were expensed in two amounts, both classified as "taxi". But politicians are not required to provide details of their expenditure on car transport.

In the past, Mrs Bishop has displayed a preference for hire cars from Royale Limousines - which offers chauffeured car hire for the "discerning executive" - that were also classified as "taxis" on expense reports.

Fairfax Media has previously obtained under freedom-of-information laws details of Mrs Bishop's transport on about 17 days between 2011 and 2012. On 11 of those, Mrs Bishop hired a car from Royale Limousines for amounts of up to $700 a day, also listed as "taxis".

Re: Political JOTD

Bronwyn Bishop has been formally invited to address a Labor Party fundraiser in attempt to further embarrass the under-fire Speaker over her spending habits.

A Melbourne ALP branch sent the invitation to Mrs Bishop - who is an avowed monarchist - on Tuesday. Money raised from the event to be donated to the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre.

The event can take place at a time and date of your choosing but the sooner the better

On Saturday, while facing questions about her use of entitlements to take a $5227 helicopter charter flight from Melbourne to attend a Liberal Party fundraiser in Geelong, Mrs Bishop said that as Speaker: "I speak to community groups, I'll speak to Liberal groups, I'll even speak to Labor groups".

Clifton Hill branch president Antony Moore has seized on that apparent offer to appear at Labor events, writing that his branch had read "with great pleasure" that she was available to talk to interested groups about the Parliament.

The branch holds three forums a year where a guest speaker, who did not have to be from the ALP, speaks. It is currently planning its next event.

"We would like to invite you to be our guest speaker on the topic 'What role will the Westminster system play in an Australian Republic?'"
