What's the best beer?

Haven't had a beer thread for a while.

Just wondering what is the best available beer? Obviously Americans won't have much to contribute here. tongue

I used to think Whale Ale was a contender but my lately my palate says no.

Tried a Crown Golden Ale today but found it lacking.

Suggestions?

If you actually want your drink to taste good then try cider instead.

Re: What's the best beer?

Covered cider when I was feeling a bit metrosexual. I'll leave that for the experts in Melbourne, but Bilpin is good. There's also a very nice Tasmanian cider from the Huon Valley that I can't recall but it was rather expensive.

The best beer is the one in your hand. A beer in the hand is worth two in the shop.

Good choice.

I'm also very fond of Corona, but for some reason it gives me a bad headache the next day.

The following stood out for me in the last few months- Bees Kneez, James Squires/The Chancer Golden Ale, Great Northern Brewing Company Original Lager, Sam Adams Double Bock,

Try Crown Ambassador Reserve if you're feeling a bit heavy in the pockets, very much worth it. Liquid velvet riding on a carpet of silk smile

I've never heard of Crown Ambassador Reserve, or even seen it! Is it only sold in some places? Great Northern Brewing Company Original Lager is also one I haven't seen.

Re: What's the best beer?

Nice dark beers (because it's winter):

BrewCult Black IPA
Feral Smoked Porter
Rouge Chocolate Stout
Sierra Nevada Stout
Rocks Chocolate Milk Stout

...and...

Wells Banana Bread Ale
Wells Sticky Toffee Pudding Ale

....which are not dark beers, but strange and delicious.

Re: What's the best beer?

This thread should really be in the members area.

"Best" depends on what circumstances you are talking about. Except for Coopers Mid and light which I don't particularly like, the I reckon Coopers Pale is a great regular beer, their stout is hard to beat and the Vintage is simply sublime (and gets better when you manage to cellar it).

In terms of cheap $5-$5.50 draught beers (schooners), I'd vote for VB. Seems boring but has been a best seller for many years for a reason.

It's a limited edition beer but Dan's may have some left from 2014.

For a delicious darker beer try Negra Modelo. And as Silver Soul recommended, try Matsos Mango beer. Little bit of heaven on a sunny day.

Best beer I remember tasting is Blue Ice Beer in Thailand. Or maybe it was the memories of getting hammered mid-day with two very hot female friends big_smile

Ps nice little dig at our American members! tongue But I did like

House: RE the Ambassador - in your opinion is it worth anywhere near its price? It's v. expensive for a single tallie. Or is it a bit like a Grange?

-1 on the Beez Kneez. It's very good for a single bottle. But it rapidly loses it's drinkability by its 2nd or 3rd. IMO a good beer has to be one that you can keep drinking. Chancer is one such beer but is below the "sweet spot" for alcohol content.

Well you did pay $50 for a nip of scotch once before wink Before I tasted it definitely didn't think so but afterwards, definitely worth it. Read up on it and you'll probably be swayed to try one at some stage.

Try the Bees Kneez from tap, didn't like the bottled version for whatever reason.

Drink heavier beers instead of clear light color types. Stouts and heavy darker ales.

Coopers Original is a top example. Turn before opening, sediment is yummy and you wont get a banging headache, as long as you allow for the higher alc content and dont go overboard.
