Re: What's the best beer?

Just poured an Anderson Valley - Hop Ottin' IPA

After a couple of jars of Hawkers PA, definite hop action that lurks a bit.

Little malty for my taste 2 beers in but I think I like it.

EDIT:

Seriously giving this one another crack from the get go.

Bit loose as far as WC IPA go. I've read it's classic West Coast but to me way too forward malty, but that's not a bad thing, just odd. Hoppy as hell (cascade & columbus) and finishes dry and tarty as you'd expect.

Head retention seriously like a massive bodied stout and yet mouth feel quite thin and sessionable.. Finished beer and the last thing I had was the cream off the top. Insane cascading.

You leave your cup out overnight and you'll need a rigid brush to clean it the next day.

Great beer.

Re: What's the best beer?

Ahh interested in that jam beer.

Lately I am drinking Coopers mild.

I like a fuller flavour like pale ales but find I can drink a few of these and not be pissed, kinda novel.

And it's not crap and watery like every other mid strength on the market

It's not terrible. For a mid strength beer I think it's difficult to find better at a decent rate.

Not a massive fan of POR but I think you're right, for a mid strength beer they've somehow managed to give it the body of a 5-6%er.

I emailed them a while ago with a suggestion to hop it up a little. Haven't received a reply.

In my opinion, Founders are the best brewer I have come across in the past 6 months.

Their Pils is nice and will be sensational on a 30' Aussie day.

Have you tried their Centennial IPA or Breakfast Stout.

Do yourself a favour Greg.

Re: What's the best beer?

The Anderson Valley Brewing Co's Briney Melon Gose is definitely not one of the best beers. Imagine crushing 300 grams of Warheads and mixing it with mineral water, that's what the Briney Melon Gose tastes like. Big flavour shit taste! Like drinking tennis balls, fills the entire edges of your palate with taste but has nothing in the middle.

You're probably being a little too kind.

I've had two of their Gose (strawberry maybe? and the melon). Not sure which is the more complete shit. Absolutely terrible.

Should be illegal to sell in beer shops.

Tried it. Not a huge fan. Their Blood Orange Gose was way better.

If you've not developed a taste for sour beers yet, hold off drinking many more until spring/summer. They're much more palatable in hot weather and you'll come to appreciate them a lot more.

Plus, you're wasting the stout and porter season!

interesting question
does food or beverage store better in glass or anodised metal?
the standard beer can is now aluminium but the sheeting probably is coated. With materials science as advanced as it is, it must be time for a resurgence of the tinny versus glass.
contemporary canned beer is less voluminous, easier to carry and crush, but tastes metallic. It is avoided by most. This is an opportunity, because the love of beer is unchanged.

Re: What's the best beer?

Last few craft beers I've tried:

Cricketers Arms Journeyman, refreshing, mild flavour. Buy again? No
Burleigh Brewing Dukes Helles, drank it last week but can't remember much about it. Was good though, hard to fault any BB brew, typical light flavoured Munich Beer tent style. Buy again? Yes.
Burleigh Brewing Dukes Premium Lager. This would be a candidate for a carton buy at Christmas (the other is The Colonial Draught), I'd drink the whole lot over a couple of days lounging around eating seafood and hopping in and out of the spa. Buy again? Definitely.
4Pines Cascadian Double IPA. Sat on this smoking a cigar for over an hour last week, great beer, the citrus finish cleans up the typical hops of the IPA. Buy again? Would if they ever produce it again.
Unibroue La Fin du Monde. Another beer I sat on and took over an hour to drink. At 9% ABV it's a wise move. This is one of the most highly rated beers in the world and I wouldn't argue. Better palates than mine have reviewed this so I won't bother saying any more. Buy again? Absolutely, when I can afford it at over $15/355ml stubbie! big_smile

Beer does stay fresher in cans but cans don't actually make it taste metallic. You think it tastes metallic because it tastes different and you assume that because it's in a metal can the difference is a metallic taste, but that's actually just what fresh beer tastes like - sharper (especially hoppy beers) and less degraded from exposure to light (like it is in bottles).

Re: What's the best beer?

Can you get beer shipped to Australia?  I'm not sure the rules on this...but, I'd be more than willing to send you a bottles of Cigar City beer.  They have a top-rated Imperial Stout that is ranked in the top 10 in most worldwide polls.  I live about 7 miles from their brewery in Tampa, Florida.  It's called the Cigar City Hanahpu Imperial Stout.  Found here:

https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/17981/47022/

American brewing companies have gotten a bad rap, understandably so...with crap beers such as Bud and Bud Light, Coors and Miller lite.  But, most people that I know have been purchasing the Craft beers, from local artisans...and, not the cheep $5.99 6-pack stuff anymore.  Beers such as Corona (one of the worst beers in Mexico) and Heineken are just very bad beers with horrible after-tastes as well.

The beer has been popping up in more places, but I remember them as a very small brewery. They have several great beers, and some of it is rather limited.
