Re: Rare, Collectable and Old Fashion Silver Bar. II

This Johnson Matthey London 100oz poured bar is the only example known (I couldn't find one after several intense online searches LOL)  I saw smaller sizes on allengelhard but no 100oz size bars there or anywhere else.  I broke my Kilo (latest one included for size comparison) or smaller only rule to grab this one, just over spot was too hard to resist!

Re: Rare, Collectable and Old Fashion Silver Bar. II

How see's what I see?

I never noticed that Engelhard Australia used 2 different stamps for their 1oz Gold Buttons.

See for your self.

10678_2_x_1oz_gold_engelhard_australia_new_pair_2.jpg

I would love your feedback and does anyone have more of one rather than the other?

I think the one on the right in my pics is less common.

Re: Rare, Collectable and Old Fashion Silver Bar. II

Stoic, its not W&N,its W&H. Walker and Hall were Silversmiths in England back in the 1800's.

The W&H hallmark was produced inside a flag back in the 1920's from memory. This bar was most likely a piece that came from New Zealand where Walker and Hall had several jewelry Stores. They still exist in Auckland and have a store downtown, plus one at the airport and the big old store in Nth Auckland. I have met several members of the family over the years and are long generation Jewellers

This bar is most likely a Matthey Garret bar with the WH counterstamp. The font on the bar is similar to several bars that i have in my collection.

The ASS bar is another counterstamp that was applied to CIMET minted bars, also from New Zealand back in the 1980's

Hope this info helps

Would support aussiesilver's theory.

Present on NZ market.
Please see below my recent find with the stamp discussed.
500g Mathey Garrett (MG) with this stamp on
and 'older brother'? 1kg only WH stamp
but looks like early 'Cimet bars' uploaded in this thread earlier.

In 2016 I noticed a number of 2kg+ poured bars sold on local market with W&H stamp,
(1 with original receipt dating to mid 70s). You can also see this stamp on old-style neck SS pedants.

Re: Rare, Collectable and Old Fashion Silver Bar. II

Another ultra rare Johnson Matthey bar, this time one produced here in the USA.  Note how it's much more chunky and compact than the JM London bar, I think we'll be switching back to smaller size bars and newly released coins, but if a really rare JM Canada 100oz bar comes along close to spot all bets will probably be off LOL

Nice!   I like how the JM logo is slightly different 10oz vs. 100 oz.  I also notice your JM London bar also has that cool fleck effect some of or JM bars have.

Re: Rare, Collectable and Old Fashion Silver Bar. II

To continue with Matthey Garrett, please find below a couple of MG bars purchased from a friendly dealer.
The bars look quite old.
It is hard to attribute the age/mintage - no information on AllEnglehard.
I would suggest MG stamps preceded Matthey Garrett stamps and the most recent had both of them.
i.e. their 100g bars.
If anyone has information to share, feel free to do so.

edit:Just noticed the purity marking is different on both bars, seems to be weird

Re: Rare, Collectable and Old Fashion Silver Bar. II

A couple of ABC bars, one I have never seen before. it has the same serial and weight stamp as Engelhard bars and the other has the same 999+ SILVER
all 3 must have come from the same moulds.

Looking at Matthey Garrett's relationship with JM
1948 - 1961 GARRETT DAVIDSON & MATTHEY PTY LTD
1961-1992 Matthey Garrett PTY LTD

There is 1948 announcement, thought I would share.

Re: Rare, Collectable and Old Fashion Silver Bar. II

Another 1.002 MG bar, similar to one of the posted.
18747_img_2619a.jpg

Interestingly an MG AD from 1980 has silver bar with the stamp "Matthey Garrett",
whereas the gold bar has 'MG'
Given there was an official MG office in Auckland, I believe as early as from 1950s,
this could be survived earlier versions of MG 1kg silver bars.

Re: Rare, Collectable and Old Fashion Silver Bar. II

Here is my Johnson Matthey, I didn't find one with the same stamp on allengelhard.com so I've sent them a picture too.
It looks like it was made for bank LEU, Zurich. A Swiss private bank that existed from 1755 to 2007.
I hid most of the serial number.

Awesome old JML bar, I've never seen one with that counterstamp on it.  I think people are holding onto more of their bars waiting to see if the Trump win will translate into higher metals prices, my usual sources for old bars have run dry, at least for the moment.

Got these beauties today, Swiss Bank Corporation is not really rare, it serves more for size comparison.
Ögussa is very hard to find. Extensive googling only found me one example and it didn't have the Volksbank counterstamp on it.
Interesting size and 999,7 puritiy.

Both awesome kilo bars.  I've only seen photos of the Ogussa bar of that type (older, more chunky and with the Volksbank counterstamp), never listings.   The listings for the SBC kilo with those counterstamps were pretty reasonably priced back when silver was around $15/oz but back then they weren't really on my radar.  Now that I want one like that (we do have the MP stamped one) they're  always crazy expensive here LOL
