based on the plastic pouch, general appearance and the eye of the panda in the background which looks a bit off I think it is....

I have my doubts about some of his listings as well.

The color is off, the fur is off, there should not be a capsule inside OMP for 2010 etc

Yeah steer clear wink

Re: Phoney Pandas 山寨

I am sure the panda experts get tired of looking at these for us, but we really appreciate it! Is this a real panda..price looks great..seller has magnitude of sales with 100% positive feed back..but the Panda looks terrible. Is it just a bad pic or a fake panda..thanks in advance.

Looks a bit suss, the 1989 1oz expo panda looks like this.

So I have no idea wtf that coin is. Don't think it's even a Panda.

Apparently it's a 5oz Panda. But the eBay listing says 1oz so it's not only completely suss, it's completely wrong!

Re: Phoney Pandas 山寨

Even if it's not fake (and it looks very bad), that's a Hong Kong coin, not a Chinese coin.

The coin in the eBay listing uses simplified Chinese though, something that Hong Kong coins pre-1997 would and should not be doing.

Re: Phoney Pandas 山寨

Got what I believe are my first two fake pandas. Ebay seller (john112533029) seemed honestly unaware and offered a refund upon receiving them back. Admitted to not being familiar with pandas, so I would avoid buying from again.

Fur is off; details are off; date and yuan marks are off; can't even see the weight/purity stamp; weighs only 27 grams in capsule.

I was disappointed to say the least, but yes, at least he didn't give me a hard time about wanting to send them back for a refund. He said he picked these up at a coin show in Florida a couple years back from a dealer he sees there. Said neither of them deal much in pandas, so I guess they wouldn't know what to look for in a fake. Oh well. No more buying pandas from auctions with crummy photos for me.

Re: Phoney Pandas 山寨

coins.with.equity - is using a grading service called NGA - National Guaranteed Authentication? Have never heard if this grading service? Selling allot of Pandas now just scrolling through and saw them!

I've been buying just from APMEX just because I am scared of getting scammed or verifying through NGC, etc.

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Is_NGA_a_reli … ng_company

No, I can't seem to find -any- information on them. I wouldn't buy an NGA slabbed coin unless you felt that the price was right and you can tell (hands on preferably) that the coin meets your specification. Most likely NGA is a front created by a coin dealer to mark up common coins by certifying them as MS-70/69 when in reality they might only grade MS-63/4 by PCGS/NGC. So no, I would not classify NGA as a reliable grading company.

lol

Yeah avoid avoid avoid.

This clown has about 10 coins listed at the moment. Photos are the same as on page 1 of this thread.

Read the listing for a bit of a laugh....

it does look bad, maybe the panda experts can tell.

Basically, it's a tinfoil hat bonanza that's heavy on hype and short on substance.
