Here is a couple more rings I made years ago I thought Australians would appriciate the opal , I used to work with a ton of it. The lower ring is 18K with Purple Saphire and Aus. Opal, the top center ring is African Ruby and Sugilite inlay, the other two have true Black aus. Opal inlay, note the one on the right with super rare cherry red color.

Really really impresses silverstar1 - excellent craftsmanship and style in your pieces
Every day, give a gift to everyone you meet.
Not a formal, wrapped-up present - make it something personal, something that means something, something genuine. Your gift can be your smile, a word of thanks or encouragement, a gesture of politeness, even a friendly nod.

How much gold is in the bottom of these two rings silverstar? And if you don't mind (pm if you wish), what sort of price would you sell it for? I'm not interested in buying it, but I would be interested in guaging your manufacturing price for this sort of QUALITY workmanship.

silverstar1, apart from costs, why do you mainly use opal inlay instead of solids? I admit, inlay is less intrusive to wearers.

Thanks LL , the rings have quite a bit of gold on the big ring probably about 1/2 oz 14k , these are long sold so I do not remember exactly but I think the ring was around $2500 and the pendant maybe $3000 from what i remember but the materials were less expensive then.

Hi W&F inlay was just one of the first types of jewelry I learned to make so I ended up doing alot of it and getting good, and alot of stone cutting and intarsia, it is very difficult work though especially with opal as I am sure you know. I dont do alot of it any more because it is so time consuming and after cutting 10s of thousands of stones maybe more I had to take a break (on my lungs and fingers too) . I have made alot pieces I have cut cabs and stuff for too but probably more inlay , also like in this ring I use a black glue so it really darkens the crystal opal , I use some true black opal too but it is so expensive and better for cabbing.

The materials are the least of ones trouble. Its the workmanship that is most important. A nice piece of quality tourmaline rough doesn't cost too much but the quality of the workmanship to cut it is where the cost really lies ie a 20ct piece of rough might cost in the order of approx $200 (at $10/ct). Once cut, a resulting 6ct stone (pretty good yield from a 20ct piece of rough) may fetch approx $600ct (at $100/ct). Same goes with your rings. The cost of the raw gold is a given. The cost of quality workmanship however IS the truely negotiable part, with the price no doubt varying wildly depending upon many factors. ![]()
